Windows: which file to pick

Each release has two files:

The app is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC” on first launch. Click More info → Run anyway.

Linux

Download MediaCleaner-<version>-linux-x64.tar.gz, then:

tar -xzf MediaCleaner-*-linux-x64.tar.gz
cd MediaCleaner-*-linux-x64
./media_cleaner

Needs a 64-bit desktop Linux with GTK 3 and glibc 2.38 or newer — for example Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 39, Linux Mint 22 or later. There is no menu entry yet — run it from the unpacked folder.

macOS

Download MediaCleaner-<version>-macos.zip, unzip it and move Media Cleaner to Applications. One build runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, macOS 10.15 Catalina or newer.

The app is not signed with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS blocks the first launch:

After that it opens normally.

What it finds

Nothing is deleted automatically: every result comes with a preview, folder and file size, and you choose exactly what goes. Safe Folders keep chosen directories out of every scan.

Desktop version

On Windows, macOS and Linux you pick a folder or a whole drive to scan — handy for camera archives and external disks. The desktop version is free, with no ads and no limits: every setting is unlocked.

Scanning speed depends mostly on the drive: photos have to be read in full to be compared, so an external disk on a USB 2.0 port is several times slower than the same disk on USB 3.

Privacy

The scanning engine is written in C++ and runs locally on all CPU cores. Your photos and videos are never uploaded, copied or shared, and no account is needed. See the privacy policy.
